When it comes to entertainment, I’m fussy. I’d rather watch a favorite movie a dozen times than sit in front of the screen and watch a mediocre show. I also purchase DVDs and have a large collection of favorites. Movies like the latest Dune, Alice in Wonderland, Narnia, the extended edition of Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. I even purchased Superman.
Because I’ve dappled in filmmaking, there are some things I look for in a production. Cinematography, direction, talent, and of course, the screenplay.
Browsing through Amazon Prime the other day I took a chance at The House of David, not knowing if I’d like it. I’ve seen some biblical shows that were not well made and wasn’t sure about this one.
Not so with The House of David. I was captivated from the beginning and each episode had hooked me deeper and deeper into the story.
Created by Jon Erwin
Logline: The once-mighty King Saul falls victim to his own pride, as an outcast shepherd boy, David is anointed as the second king.
Following David's journey and his rise to kingship, this T.V. adaption also humanizes Saul's downfall by highlighting his and his family’s stories weaving a complex tapestry of loyalty, betrayal, and loss.
Erwin, as both director and writer, masterfully crafts the personalities of these characters, unveiling the conflict between the cousins and its repercussions with stunning clarity.
The color of the film is enchanting, the touch of supernatural brings a biblical magic to the story, the dialogue is profound and realistic. The interplay between David and his brothers, perfect, and the tension kept me on the edge of my seat. That they portrayed David as the young shepherd-musician made the him loveable and true to source.
The acting superb.
Even if you aren’t a believer in Christianity, there is much to take away from this exciting historical adaption. I have to rein myself in from binge watching the entire season in one sitting. Instead, I’m enjoying an episode one a day, like a savory meal. I don’t doubt I’ll watch it over again!
I highly recommend The House of David. I doubt that you’ll be disappointed.
