I have the good fortune of being in (at least) two local author groups here in the Pacific Northwest. They are both what I call ‘marketing’ groups where we pool our resources and rent spaces at fairs, bazaars, and festivals and then sell like crazy! I’m actually the event coordinator for one of those groups which keeps me busy.
It also opens up the opportunity to read my fellow authors works of art. From memoirs to historical fiction, to poetry, and of course to fantasy and everything in between.
As much as I enjoy the genre I write in, I have to say some of my favorite books are historical fiction, and historical reality. Whereas I’ve dabbled in those genres myself in Where the Yellow Violets Grow (taken from letters that an inlaw wrote during WWII), and Thread of a Spider (an historical fantasy), I appreciate the labor that goes into them.
One of my favorite local, independent authors is D.L. Fowler. Folks around here have dubbed him “The Lincoln Guy” for his extensive research on Abraham Lincoln has won prestigeous awards and speaking engagements. Frankly I’m surprised he isn’t more famous than he is. He’s a joy to work with and is actually the one who created The Greater Gig Harbor Literary Society, the group I’m the event coordinator for.
I’ve read his book and am amazed at his talent. I’ll include a link to his current Kickstarter campaign so you can check out this cool card game he created. It’s really a Collector’s item but I’ll let you see for yourselves.
I love to read. If I’m not writing you’ll find my nose in another book. My husband is the same way. They say reading is good for your health in that it exercises your brain, increasing your ability to empathize, reduces stress, and of course, builds your vocabulary, which give you communication skills. It also drags you away from social media and the television which, any more, does the exact opposite!
It’s funny, but my favorite place to read is outside on my lounge chair on a sunny day. I’ve read so often out there that as soon as I unfold my chair, I’m opening a door to another universe, one that an author introduces me to.
Right now I’m reading Terry Pratchett’s Monstrous Regiment. What a fun story! Maybe I’ll do a book review when I’m done!
I’m writing Tuesdays’ Telling a day early because Larry launches his campaign this morning and I promised to give him a shout out. I hope you take a look. This card game is great for parties, quiet get togethers, and homeschoolers.
And if you’re in the market for more fantasy reads, a group of us have put together a BookFunnel promo leading to our Kickstarter campaigns. Enjoy!
And The Keeper has 7 days to go, and 7 stretch goals reached, which means you’ll be getting a lot more than you pledge for! A free eBook, bonus material in your books which are being upgraded, and beautiful wall paper for your devices!
