I’m always honored when an author friend sends me a paperback book to review. I used to have a Kindle but it ended up being my music box when I painted, hooking me up with Pandora and mood music, and then the thing died after so many years. I don’t even know where it is anymore.

My favorite thing to do in the summer is to sit in my lawn chair, enjoy the breeze, the warm sun, the birds, and read. You can’t do that with a Kindle. The screen is black and reflective and besides, there are no pages to turn. I will never lose my love for paperback books. I need a bigger house because my bookshelves are stacked high and my husband is worse than I am. He has piles of books in the bedroom that aren’t even on a shelf.

Anyway…

Amos J. Landon wrote a middle-grade book that is simply charming about a boy who is a dragon. But he doesn’t know it until he starts fledgling.

Here’s the blurb:
Ash Cooper thought moving to a new town was the worst thing ever. He was wrong.
On his eleventh birthday, Ash sprouts wings, scales, and claws—because he’s actually a dragon. A purple one. And not just any dragon, but the long-lost heir to a secret dragon empire.

Now he’s stuck balancing middle school, learning to breathe fire, and hiding from The Order of Saint Theodore, a secret guild of dragon hunters who want him gone for good.

The good news? He’s got Syd—the tiniest, snarkiest sidekick around—to help him figure out how to survive sixth grade AND become the Emperor of all Dragonkind.
The bad news? Dragon hunters aren’t the only threat lurking in the shadows.
Surviving sixth grade just got a whole lot trickier.

Perfect for fans of Rick Riordan and Shannon Messenger, FLEDGLING is the first book in an exciting new trilogy about friendship, finding where you belong, and the power of chosen family.

The book is fun. It’s got all the thoughts, emotions, and quirkiness you’d expect from a protagonist that age. Ash is bounced around between two universes in action-filled pages and just when he learns to keep up, something else bombards him. Dragon Hunters, a Royal order, a puzzling heritage, a mysterious library, and an instruction book on how to be a dragon that he has to first learn how to open. Not to mention his sassy girl friend who kind of guides him along the way, even though she giggles at his blunders.

This is book 1 of The Dragon Emperor series and Amos tells me book 2 will be released on April 1 of this year. Book 3 is planned for November 1, 2026.

You should pick a copy up. He’s got it in KU too.
