And the secret behind the title.
I’ve been asked ‘what is hoarfrost’ and why did you name your book Hoarfrost to Roses?
The term “hoarfrost” is derived from the Old English meaning of frost resembling an old man’s beard. Technically it’s frost that forms when moisture in the air skips the water droplet stage and appears directly as ice crystals on an object.
So why did I title my book Hoarfrost to Roses?
Well, it’s a long story (no pun intended) but I’ll give you this.
When we first meet Grai, he is attacked by strangers and left for dead. However, he survives, but his spirit is partially separated from him. Grai’s spirit is his optimistic side, the part of him that doesn’t want to give up, nor does he want to be sad.
While Grai, wounded and afraid, seeks shelter in the ruins of his grandfather’s estate, his spirit ventures into the snowy garden beds he used to tend to when his grandfather was alive. The flowers are in their wintry shells, brown and lifeless and serve as a stark warning of his potential fate. Not accepting this plight, his spirit revives them, bringing blossoms again in hopes to cheer his failing body.
It’s this magical act that piques the curiosity of the young lady next door.
Hoarfrost to Roses is FREE this winter. I have hopes to pique the interest of some of you, too, in hopes that you might continue this cozy historical mystery series iced with romance, intrigue, and humor.
